Well Howdy!!! Justified: City Primeval (2023) Limited Series - Early Review

Series based on Elmore Leonard's novel "City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit." Using characters from the Justified TV show.

Howdy, fellow movie buffs! Today, I want to delve into the thrilling world of the FX series "Justified: City Primeval." With the first two episodes released, fans of the original "Justified" show have been eagerly anticipating this continuation of the beloved story line. Let's saddle up and ride into the action!

First things first, let's talk about the stars who grace the screen in "Justified: City Primeval." Timothy Olyphant returns as the charismatic Raylan Givens, joined by Boyd Holbrook and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who add their own flair to the mix.

The series is based on Elmore Leonard's novel "City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit," a fitting source for a gritty and hardcore police drama. Utilizing characters from the original "Justified" TV show, the series brings back Raylan Givens for more thrilling adventures, which is a special treat for fans like myself who have been enamored with the show since its debut back in 2010.

One of the aspects I love about "Justified: City Primeval" is the wit of the writing. The clever and sharp dialogues add an extra layer of enjoyment to the already gripping storyline. With each episode, I find myself hanging onto every word, eager to see how the plot unfolds.

However, I must admit that there is one element that slightly disappoints me. "Justified: City Primeval" seems to focus more on the cops in Detroit rather than continuing the original series' narrative. While exploring new territories can be refreshing, I can't help but miss the familiar Kentucky setting and the dynamic between Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder.

Now, it's time for some exciting bonus trivia about the show! During the filming in Chicago, a jaw-dropping incident occurred when a real drive-by gunfight unfolded between two cars, driving right through the road closed signs and the middle of the production. Thankfully, no one was injured, but it goes to show that sometimes life imitates art in the most unexpected ways.

Adding to the excitement, "Justified: City Primeval" marks the television debut of Timothy Olyphant's daughter, Vivian Olyphant. She portrays Willa Givens, Raylan's daughter, adding a family connection to the already talented cast.

Additionally, Paul Calderon reprises his portrayal of Raymond Cruz from "Out of Sight" (1998), a film adapted from another Elmore Leonard novel. It's a pleasant surprise to see the connection between these two projects.

In conclusion, "Justified: City Primeval" is a thrilling ride that brings back the beloved character of Raylan Givens and introduces us to a new set of gripping challenges. The hardcore police drama and sharp writing make it a must-watch for fans of the original show. Though I wish we could spend more time in Kentucky, I'm still excited to see where this series takes us next.
