Next chapter or new beginning? Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) - Review

Once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company's exodus left the city a wasteland with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, the townspeople are forever changed and a small group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.

I hate when directors are handed a franchise with a story that is easy to tell with characters and plot points already laid out, and they decide to make it their own. Characters that do not play with the franchise and the audience cannot relate with. Plot points that make no sense with the character's limited back story and storylines that are just silly when you know about the bigger franchise. Don't get me wrong, this is not a terrible movie, but one that could have been so much better if the writing was not phoned in. It's almost like they were trying to change the origin of the franchise so they could take it in a new direction. We will see.
