Marvel may have tried a little too hard to be funny - Thor Love and Thunder (2022) - Review

Writer: Dan BrooksDan Brooks

Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct.

When a Marvel movie becomes more about the people making the movie than good storytelling you get a film like this. I thought this one was one of the weirdest Marvel movies yet that had so many good characters in the film. The movie was a comedy more than an action-adventure and it does not let you forget that. Now don't get me wrong there was some hilarious over-the-top stuff that had me laughing quite a bit. My issues came from the constant need to be over-the-top weird and funny and not the subtle humor that we are accustomed to with the MCU. Christian Bale does a masterful job in his role as the God killer but with all the screaming goats and silliness of Matt Damon and Luke Hemsworth play-acting and Russel Crowe playing a flamboyant Zeus, his performance is shadowed like his character in the shadow realm. I wish they would have been more focused on the story than the humor. I was happy to see so many of the cast and crew's children getting to play roles in the movie. Hemsworth, Bale, and Waititi all had children from their families in the film. Passing the torch so to speak. If you are a fan you will like it, but there is something missing for new fans. I think this is one of the lowest-ranked Marvel movies for me, but you tell me what you think. I think they missed some opportunities in this one, and there is a big plot hole in the movie. Can you spot it between all the chuckles?

Ranking 6.9/10
