Lets burn it all to the ground and start over - Major Grom: Plague Doctor (2021) - Review

Writer's picture: Dan BrooksDan Brooks

Police Major Igor Grom is known throughout St. Petersburg for his penetrative character and irreconcilable attitude towards criminals of all stripes. But everything changes dramatically with the appearance of a person in the mask of the Plague Doctor. Having declared that his city is "sick with the plague of lawlessness", he takes up "treatment", killing people who, at one time, escaped punishment with the help of money and high status in society. Society is agitated. The police officers are powerless. For the first time, Igor faces difficulties in the investigation, the outcome of which may determine the fate of the whole city.

What a great little movie from the Netflix team. Branching out their movie-making into different countries has been one of the best decisions by Netflix. There are so many talented writers and directors from all over the world, and Netflix is giving these teams a chance to shine. This one is out of Russia. With the English dubs turned on, there was some cheesy dialog at times, but I thought the action was solid, the main characters were well cast, and the premise was reminiscent of the V for Vendetta movie. Overthrow the Elite and take back riches for the common man. There is just one catch. People always tend to suck in revolutions and end up hurting themselves more than leveling the playing field. The villain's story costume and effects were well made and filmed and the backdrop of St Petersburg was a perfect fit for the sotory arc. Well worth a watch if you are looking for something this weekend. Give it a watch and let me know what you think.
